Renée Whitman- Approved [G]
« on: 22 Aug 2011, 07:34 pm »
First and Last Name: Renée Whitman

Bloodline: Muggleborn
Hair Color: Black
Eye Color: Blue
General Build: Petite
Height: Tall

Birthplace: Newcastle upon Tyne
Brief Childhood History:

From the minute Renée came into the world, it was clear that she was a natural leader. Her father, an Australian businessman, provided her with everything a child could ask for; however, he had very little time for her Geordie mother and it fractured the parents’ marriage. After a nasty divorce, Renée elected to live with her mother in Newcastle while spending the summers back in Sydney with her father. It wasn’t until Renée’s mother remarried to an even richer man that Renée made the choice to settle down permanently in Newcastle at the age of 9. In the span of nine years, Renée was already showing signs of a calculating and intelligent woman.

At her muggle school, Renée found herself a cult of loyal followers in a matter of days. She was the most popular girl in a school of more than 600 children, and she loved every minute of it. Living in the lap of luxury certainly made her a bit spoiled, but Renée biological and step parents alike have always encouraged her to strive towards a life of generosity and community service. Her loyal friends were always there to lend a hand as well if she requested their aid, making Renée a very valuable asset to many people. A girl who had only just turned 10 years old was showing true promise in the muggle community.

It was the letter from Hogwarts that changed everything, put a wrench in her future prospects and brought her life to a halt. No longer could she thrive in an environment where she was well known, with parents that had money, where she could steal her mother’s blackberry to make her schedule. She is now plunging head first into a world where nobody knows her name and she has no idea what to expect—what is a wand, how do you fly on a broom, and why is everybody wearing black cloaks instead of actual trendy fashion?

Strengths (Including Personality and Academic): Renée loves success, and she lets it drive her actions. She loves to help people, and loves when people know her name. Ambitious and adventurous to a fault, Renée is very resourceful. Her methods might not always be the MOST admirable, but they’re always well-intended. If she lived in Robin Hood’s time, she would most certainly steal from the rich and give to the poor. She particularly excels at Potions and Herbology because they allow her to be very hands on with her school work just as she was with her community service in the muggle world.
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic): Renée can easily be blinded by her own hubris. She was raised to believe that she is the best of the best, and she has believed it for her entire life. Although she wears her heart on her sleeve and is outwardly compassionate, many people find her to be showboating more often than not. Most crippling is her dependence on money, a luxury she has never lived without. Being a middle class witch will not amuse her in the least. On the academic side of things, Renée simply has no time for History of Magic, a class she finds trivial and beneath her. If she didn’t fear the repercussions, she would probably skip the class, but she is, deep down, a stickler for rules.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Renée was selling lemonade to passersby at the age of six. A year later, she was running for “political office” at her grade school. She could fly on planes by herself, make her own dinner, and carry on intelligent conversations with kids twice her age. This yearning, ambition and self-sufficiency make her a good choice for Slytherin, but it’s her compassion and courage that suggests she’s a far better fit for Gryffindor. Renée has always been the person to jump head first into something new and uncharted. Her curiosity is fueled by an adventurous spirit. She’s not used to failure, but even that would not cripple her. Renée is all about saving face, so if she were ever to fail at a new venture, she would just aim higher next time.

Hi and welcome to hprpg :D

Just a small thing I need you to change before we proceed. In order for Renee to attend Hogwarts, she needs to have been born and raised in the UK.  :sweatdrop: Just spending summers there won't work. She can visit Sydney often, but she'd have to live in the UK in order to qualify to attend Hogwarts.

Once you've made that change, switch your subject from 'pending' to 'edited' and we can proceed. :D

I was a bit confused because I felt like these two statements were conflicting, or at the very least the second was vague:

Quote
- Your character must have been born and raised somewhere in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. (Hogwarts is a school for British and Irish witches and wizards after all!)

Quote
Please keep in mind that according to J.K. Rowling, when a child possessing magical abilities is born in the UK, it is recorded into Hogwarts records.  When the time comes to send out letters, this is how the school knows who to send letters to.  If your character was born in another country, they wouldn't be on the Hogwarts mailing list.  Also, they would get letters from the schools of witchcraft and wizardry of the countries they were born in.

I purposefully made her British born because I felt that it would be enough to get her on the registry (originally she was born in Australia when I wrote it up), and then when I read the first quote I amended her history again to give her enough time in the UK, eventually with a permanent address there. Is there truly no way around this? Would wizards and witches who moved abroad be stuck in some twilight zone where they cannot attend any schools if this the case? Harry, when his parents died, would have moved to France if that's where the Dursley's happened to live or moved to at any point in his childhood. Are you to say Hogwarts would not have him or that he would not be allowed to go to Beauxbatons?

I know JK Rowling may have said that, but even in the book it was mentioned that Lucius wanted to send Draco to Durmstrang; however, Narcissa didn't like the idea. I don't mind changing it again, I just think this rule is a little bizarre and doesn't make much sense.

Actually, we know for a fact that JK Rowling has said that, as seen by lines in the books, interviews, as well as Pottermore. Yes, Lucius wanted Draco to go to Durmstrang, but those are Durmstrang's rules on enrollment, not Hogwarts. And as we know, children who are automatically enrolled into Hogwarts from birth do not have to attend Hogwarts. Some parents choose to send their children off to other wizarding schools or not to send them at all. The second quote is sound fact. The first quote is our expansion on that fact. It just doesn't seem likely that someone who lived majority of their life in another country would come to Hogwarts to study. Why not simply attend a magical school there instead?

If anything else is unclear, we are happy to try and expand more on the subject. ;)

Well she wouldn't go to the Australian school because she's decided to move back to the UK and it's a long flight from England to Australia on a broomstick, lmfao. I'll change it but the rule doesn't make any sense, like I said, and nothing you claim to have seen from a JK Rowling interview will convince me otherwise.

It's also partly because we've had way too many people wanting to have their characters traveling all over the world, to the point where it's unrealistic. =/ It's partially our rule, but mostly because of the canon information provided about students being born and raised in the UK. I'm sorry that you feel it doesn't make sense, but we can't make exceptions because it gets way out of hand.  :sweatdrop:

Also, Gryffindor is full at the moment, so I'm going to stick you on the waiting list. :D If you don't want to wait, you can let us know and we'll sort her into another house. (Hufflepuff is the only one open at the moment)
