Brief Childhood History: Declan was born on August 15th to father Sean O’Brien, a wizard and writer who traveled the world researching wizard’s history, and mother Kaitlin O’Brien, an American Healer that his father met during his travels. Both of Declan’s parents are of magical descent, but neither believe that being pure-blood makes you better than others. Living in Cork, the O’Briens were well-integrated into Muggle society, having a close relationship with several of their neighbors. As a child, Declan spent much of his time at the house several doors down, where his childhood best friend Robert lived, making Declan quite knowledgeable on some aspects of Muggle life.
Declan’s father traveled a large amount for his work, so Declan is much closer to his mother. However, the family house elf Xad helped Declan’s mother take care of him, and developed a close bond with Declan.
Having only two friends growing up (Xad and Robert), Declan was very protective of both of his friends, and would always stick up for Robert, despite his small size, when older kids picked on him.
Declan’s parents had wizard friends who would visit often, sometimes bringing their children along. Declan found these other magical children to be less interesting than the Muggles who lived around him, and disliked their company, preferring instead to play with Robert or Xad.
Over the years, Declan’s father brought him a collection of different magical souvenirs, including a rare Long-whiskered owlet from Peru for his eleventh birthday.
Strengths (Including Personality and Academic): An individual with a love of learning, Declan exceled in every class before attending Hogwarts. His true brilliance lies in the realm of logic and a knack for noticing small details others may miss at first. Due to this, Declan will succeed most in Potions and Transfiguration, but his love of history gives him a strong drive in History of Magic. Declan’s love of being the best in everything often causes him to draw attention to himself by trying new variations on old work. Declan is a very kind spirit, who has everyone’s best intentions at heart, but he will fiercely defend his few friends if they are in trouble. However, he also will stick up for others if his friends are being mean to them, often telling his friends off for being rude (he is particularly unforgiving to the mistreatment of house elves due to his close relationship with the family elf).
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic): Declan is a highly intelligent individual, but this sometimes leads to an over-inflated head and pompous manner. He tends to take things too personally, especially when his work is criticized. Declan considers it his duty to help those who are struggling but refuses to ask friends for help for fear of his reputation being tarnished, but he also does not trust others easily, often taking their work to be wrong, and will instead consult a book or professor. Due to his preference for being indoors, Declan tends to lack in the subjects of Herbology and Care of Magical Creatures. Declan loves Quidditch, but lacks coordination, making him terrible in athletics.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Declan’s intelligence and love for school is his most easily recognizable trait, making him an ideal choice for Ravenclaw. But deeper down, Declan also has a brave spirit and a great deal of nerve, never afraid of the punishment for his actions if he knows, deep down, that his actions were in the best interest of everyone. This quality is something that is observed in Gryffindors, making him equally suited for this house. Having a distant relationship with his father (who was in Ravenclaw), Declan hopes to be in Gryffindor, wanting to show that he is quite different from his father. Overall, Declan would be best suited for Gryffindor, which will help him grow as a wizard.
