Brief Childhood History: Ralph was raised with his little sister by a single squib mum (his father having walked out many years previous). He grew up in a small grimy flat on the outskirts of London in not such a great neighbourhood, his mum working all the time in order to make ends meet. As a squib, his mother always felt outcast around wizarding folk and although Ralph appreciates his mother, he resents being raised away from magical people. His father sent money for a few years before he left and would stop in to take Ralph and his sister on outings but these stopped abruptly when he remarried (a pureblood witch). Ralph has never met his new half siblings (and isn't sure he wants to). He doesn’t remember a lot about his father – the last time he saw him was when he was six – but sometimes wishes he’d come back as Ralph remembers life being a lot more comfortable when his dad was around to support them.
His being raised in near poverty has given Ralph high aspirations and from the little he's heard about Quidditch so far he knows that's what he wants to do with the rest of his life. He played football for a while as a child but had to stop so he could take care of his sister after school.
Strengths: Ralph likes to think himself a master strategist. Before he got flak for it being 'uncool', he was in the Chess Club at school and was the reigning champion (including against teachers). He's also good at coming up with plays in football, meaning that a lost game wasn't usually down to him. Ralph is a definite hard worker – he knows that he won't get anywhere in life if he doesn't buckle down and push and shove for what he wants. Whether that's by making connections or studying for hours, he is ambitious to a fault. Ralph loves sitting down with a huge book and so is sure to enjoy History of Magic regardless of the teaching style.
Weaknesses: Ralph has a bit of an ego problem. Criticising him is a sure fire way to get him riled up (and he hasn't quite grown out of crying yet). His ambitious nature also gets him a bit of a one track mind - he has a tendency to always focus on the bigger picture and not think about how this affects those around him. He has a bit of a mean streak due to him always overcompensating. This is because of his embarrassment over the way he was brought up so he hates being asked about his home life (and consequently, his squib mother).
When he gets frustrated at not understanding something, Ralph becomes very mouthy. He also finds Potions unfathomable as the reading doesn’t always translate exactly into what happens in the cauldron.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Ralph's dedication to doing well and making something of himself put him firmly in Ravenclaw. Sitting down with a maths textbook for three hours was not unknown to him, even when he was only 10 years old. His strategic thinking make him not the typical football player or Quidditch-mad youth but one who brings the cautious and considered nature of chess to the table.
If not Ravenclaw, then Slytherin - for Ralph will do anything to achieve his ambitions (although cunning… doesn’t exactly describe him).
