Brief Family History: Reed’s parents, Jaskaran and Lavali, emigrated from Amritsar in West India and settled closer to his mother’s family in Bristol, England. Between his parents, two older sisters, eighteen aunts and uncles and thirty-eight cousins, the Badal house is loud all the time. The Badals are a close family, in each other’s business all the time, and it’s easy for one kid to disappear in the crowd. The more his mum badgered him to socialize, the more withdrawn Reed became, a very quiet boy. He had a stutter, which made him even less talkative. At school he had earned the nickname ‘Tiptoes’ from his classmates for being quiet. He also got a reputation for playing by the rules.
Reed’s parents own a small restaurant and have done well for themselves, though their finances are limited. They are trying to put their oldest daughter, Lalita, through college, pre-law. Their second daughter, Lisbeth, is a talented dancer. They also hope to eventually pay for two weddings. Reed hangs out, trying to get good grades and stay out of trouble. For the most part, he succeeds. If he sees something terribly unfair, he feels like he should do something about it. Normally he ends up getting beaten up, but he tries.
Getting a letter to a school of magic was definitely not staying out of trouble. Suddenly he was the center of attention, getting congratulations on being the only one with magic. He wasn’t sure if he liked it. What he did like, on the other hand, was the peace and quiet that a boarding school brought. Compared to his family, hundreds of kids his age are nothing.
Strengths (Including Personality and Academic): Keeping secrets and being as quiet as possible, except when he sees something unfair. Reed prefers wand work to anything that requires him to get his hands dirty. He likes things the way he likes them, a bit of an obsessive perfectionist. He could do without the strenuous bookwork of some of his classes, but overall he’s a good student. His best classes are Transfiguration and Charms.
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic): His worst class is Herbology, mostly because Reed doesn’t like to get messy. He prefers things neat and tidy. He also tends to be a bit obsessive over details. He has a stutter, which is one of the reasons he prefers to be quiet.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Hufflepuff. Reed tries to mind his own business, but he hates to see something unfair or someone being treated unfairly. He’s gotten more than his share of black eyes from it.
