Brief Family History: Melinda MacDiarmid was just an ordinary witch working as a florist in Wexford which was also magically enchanted to appear as a herbology shop for the magical folk. Her flowers were known to always smell better and last longer than ordinary flowers, which baffled her competitors, but always kept her customers coming back. It was due to this exact reason that she met her husband, Martin Lovell, a journalist for a small newspaper in London. He was assigned to write an article about Miss MacDiarmid and her amazing floral shop but his trip to Ireland led to more than just a simple interview. It was only a year later that Martin transferred from London to Wexford to live with his then fiancée. Melinda had yet to tell him about her being a witch and with the wedding nearing and her finding out that she was pregnant, well, it was safe to say that she wasn't sure if Martin could handle all of it at once. But with persuasion from her own mother - who had a very similar experience with her own husband - she bravely went forward and explained to Martin exactly why her flowers flourished the way they did. It came as no surprise to her that Martin at first reacted with shock and then nearly fainted at the news of the baby. But he loved her and told her that it didn't matter if she was a witch or not because he still loved her all the same. And then eight and a half months later they were greeted with their first son, Terry Lovell.

It wasn’t long after Terry’s birth that they decided to move up to Dublin; Martin had been offered a better position at a different newspaper and Melinda wanted to open up a bigger shop. Less than a year later they were greeted with their second son, Jarrod Lovell. It was at this point that they had decided to stop having any more children, mainly because they were sure if they could handle them financially. Melinda’s shop wasn’t doing nearly as well as it had been doing in Wexford and Martin had yet to impress his new editor with anything spectacular. The next few years grew hard on Melinda as she attempted to juggle two infants and an entire shop on her own. There was no doubt that using magic did help her out at times but even still she was beginning to be stretched too thin. It was then that Martin made the decision to quit his job and help his wife in the shop and at home. While he would still be writing articles once in awhile on the side, he explained his main job would be to help his wife. Things started to look up from there. The shop once again began to flourish as Melinda had more time to manage it and her two sons began to grow rapidly but it was when they were at their highest point that they were suddenly hit with the news that Melinda was pregnant once more. While it was true that they were faring much better than before, the two weren’t sure if it was still enough to care for a third child. But in the end Melinda could not bare to think of getting rid of it. Nine months later, Colby MacDiarmid Lovell came into the world (his mother insisted on using her maiden name).

From the beginning everyone could tell that Colby was simply different than his brothers. As children Terry and Jarrod were cheerful and were always exploring and playing well with others. Colby on the other hand was a rather picky child who only tended to smile at his mother and father. As he grew up he tended to question things like why the plants in their garden moved on their own and how come he was not allowed to attend school yet. By age six he began to show signs of magical abilities, which surprised Melinda most of all because neither Terry nor Jarrod had revealed to have any ability at all. It was from that point on that Colby was no longer allowed to attend muggle schooling for he had no control over when his ability would flare up again. He didn’t mind so much though because he didn’t particularly like the little children at school anyway. At home his father began to home school him on muggle subjects while his mother taught him things about herbology and potions. Colby was always excited when his mother would tell him things about the magical world and Hogwarts because he knew that when she talked about these things she felt proud and his mother had never felt proud about anything Colby had done before.

At first Terry and Jarrod were only envious about what Colby could do but after time that simple envy became jealousy that only fueled anger. They began to pick on Colby, telling him that nobody would like him at Hogwarts and that he would get there only to find out that it was a fluke and that he didn’t have any magical abilities at all. He tried not to let his brothers affect him but deep inside he was scared and rather insecure about himself. By the time his Hogwarts letter came around he wasn’t so sure that he wanted to go anymore. But after convincing from his mother and his own realization that if he proved to his brothers that he really was a wizard they would stop picking on him, Colby decided to attend Hogwarts after all.

Strengths: Colby is intelligent, there’s no doubting that. He is quick to pick up on things and usually within the first couple of tries he can succeed. His memory is his greatest weapon for he can do it quickly although at times he may not retain it for as long as he would like to. He’s also a very truthful boy that rarely lies. But Colby can go quite overboard and be overly blunt when he doesn’t mean to be. He simply thinks that being honest and saying exactly what he thinks is better than telling a bunch of white lies just to appear amiable. Unlike most boys his age, Colby is a rather neat and organized boy. He likes having separate containers for his quills and inks so that it doesn't get all jumbled in his bag. The only time he can stand getting dirty is when doing herbology. He's given up on trying to stay neat while wrestling plants.
Weaknesses: Colby always feels the need to succeed and impress. But the problem with that is that he doesn’t always succeed on the first try, which causes him to get increasingly frustrated and embarrassed. As he becomes more flustered his performance level goes down, making him appear more unskilled than what he really is. He tends to get his nerves get to him too much, something he can ultimately thank his brothers for. This is why he always tends to work better when he’s by himself and he knows there aren’t many people watching him. Physically, Colby is very weak. He couldn’t throw a punch to save his life and he bruises rather easily. While he may insinuate a fight to scare others, the moment his opponent reveals that they would really take him on, Colby flees (running quickly is the only thing he can do well). And while he may be intelligent, he's not too bright when it comes to common sense. Such as he's oblivious to other people's feelings most of the time and will never take notice of what the mood in the air is like. He's the type of person who'll walk into a funeral and start asking questions about how they create so many flavours of jelly beans without realizing that there are people mourning the dead.

What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Ravenclaw because I think the sorting hat would see Colby’s potential as a student and a person overall and would think that placing him in this house would help him flourish instead of drown in all his insecurities.
