Brief Family History: Melissa Harvey grew up just outside of the neighborhood of Avalon Lakes and never often set foot in there. The families who lived there were nice enough folk who kept to themselves a tad more than normal, but everyone outside agreed that there was something odd about them. Melissa agreed, but it did not stop her from becoming friends with Drew McKinley, a boy from that area. They played together constantly until the fall after Drew turned eleven, when he told Melissa he would be going away to a boarding school, but would be home on holidays and over the summer. What he did not tell her was that he was a wizard and would be attending school at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Even while he was gone, however, their friendship only grew, accompanied by romantic feelings that prompted Drew to propose to Melissa the winter after her eighteenth birthday.
After they were married and Drew revealed he was a wizard, their blissful relationship suffered as they differed in opinions about how to raise their firstborn child, Whitten. Drew wished to raise her as he had been raised; in a world of magic. Melissa was afraid that if they did, and their child was a Muggle, the constant reminder would be troublesome. Even after it was proved that Whitten would take after her father in that aspect, Melissa had trouble adapting to a magical lifestyle. They ended up compromising: Whitten would go to a Muggle school, but they lived in a magical community in London, where Drew worked in the Ministry. At home, public areas were kept relatively magic-free, so that Muggle friends and relatives could visit, but occasionally one would ask about the excess of brooms, or think they saw a book re-organize itself on the shelf.
Strengths: Whitten is a rather clever child, able to pick up things quickly. She values friends above all else, and loves meeting new people. She is not afraid to talk to strangers, nor to do much else. When the situation calls for it, she will lie, steal, and take all manner of punishments for her friends, if she thinks it is worth it. She has a strong set of moral values that she will not bend, even for her highly regarded friends.
Academically, Whitten was a common participant in class, and enjoyed learning new things. She usually received good grades, with an occasional low one if the class was particularly difficult.
Weaknesses: Despite (or rather, because of) her usual success in school, Whitten was never very motivated to study. She does perfectly well without doing so, so why should she? And when she was not talking, she usually drifted off in class without realizing it, sometimes missing entire lectures because she was staring off into space or doodling. Also, though she enjoys finding new things to do, she does not often stick with them for longer than a few months.
Whitten can be rather mean if she feels someone is being an idiot. She will call them one, regardless of consequences, and proceed to inform them exactly why they are such a bloody idiot. One of her personal rules is to not lie about petty things, so she tries to answer all questions truthfully, even if the answer is hurtful. (The only time she lies is to keep her friends out of trouble, usually). She also will subject even her best friend to a lecture, or turn them in for punishment, if she feels they deserve it.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Whitten belongs in Hufflepuff, where her loyalty and morality are appreciated. Helga founded the house with the goal of taking in everyone left over from the other founders’ decisions, so I doubt anything could have made her turn down Whitten as a potential house member.
