Brief Childhood History:
The key to understanding Regis is through understanding his grandfather, Soux (pronounced SOH) Ashwell. The Ashwells were a pureblood family with modest repute and reasonable wealth. Soux has always been a firm believer of equality between all humankind. After the death of his wife, he raised his daughter Angela Ashwell on his own, instilling in her his own values of justice and equality. Under his influence, Angela joined the Ministry. There she worked under Vires Lennox, Regis' father. Unlike Soux and Angela, Vires was ambitious and a pureblood supremacist. After Angela's marriage to Vires, Soux found his daughter growing more distant from himself--both emotionally and morally. In the days leading up to Voldemort's defeat, both Vires and Angela were killed supporting the Dark Lord, leaving behind infant Regis in the care of Soux.
Anguished over his beloved daughter's death and bearing even self-hatred due to his own inability to save her from Vires' manipulation, Soux swore to lead his grandchild on the path farthest from darkness. Soux named his grandchild Regis, latin for "king", and gave Regis his mother's maiden name, Ashwell. Under Soux's tutoring, love, and guidance, Regis became an outspoken and lively child. He grew up in Ashwell manor, without interaction with the muggle world, and with little contact with even other wizards. Afraid of the corruption of the outside world, Soux kept Regis in peaceful isolation until deciding Regis was ready to enter Hogwarts. Despite having little experience with the outside world, Regis is open-minded and fascinated when meeting new people, both wizards and muggles alike. Having spent his life in the company of his doting grandfather, Regis tends to be indiscriminately trusting and believes in the intrinsic goodness of all people. His lack of social interaction, however, has fostered a frank and sometimes obnoxious nature.
Although Soux has a difficult time deceiving Regis, he has decided to hide from Regis his parents' support of the Dark Lord and Vires' prejudices against muggles. In order to shield Regis from the cruelty of the real world, he has had him believe that his parents were diligent and kind, working in the ministry in order to help others. While average in all manners of intelligence, athleticism, and magical ability, Regis' greatest aspiration is to create understanding between people and maintain peace and justice. His most beloved person is his grandfather.
Strengths (Including Personality and Academic):
While not particularly outstanding in academics nor athletics, Regis has an inexplicable ability to inspire others with his unswerving idealism and faith in humankind, making him a great leader and source of hope in desolate times. The only class in Year 1 Regis would be outstanding in would be Herbology; he appears to have a green thumb, connected to a love of living creatures in general, which may lead to success in Care of Magical Creatures (CoMC) come Year 3. He is also incredibly open-minded thanks to his grandfather's guidance, and treats all without prejudice and preconceptions.
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic):
While Regis doesn't perform very poorly in any class, his results in most classes other than Herbology are normally average. While he does work hard in hopes of making his grandfather proud, he doesn't seem to have inherited Soux's nor his parents' intelligence; he learns through experience and hands-on activities rather than through perusing textbooks and rumination. He has a difficult time paying attention during classes and he especially tends to fall asleep during the long lectures in History of Magic. Due to his long-term isolation from social interaction, Regis is too trusting and straightforward, rarely being able to detect social cues and often making inappropriate comments at inappropriate times. He is often considered loud, brash, and talkative by others. Regis furthermore grows emotionally attached to others very easily, and he fears rejection and isolation.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why:
I feel that Regis would fit well in Gryffindor; he is incredibly devoted to his ideals of justice and equality, and in achieving this goal he often performs reckless and flamboyant acts. Many criticize Gryffindors and their tendency to engage in "pointless heroics", and Regis seems to embody this with his naive and ostentatious behavior.
