First and Last Name: Marina Sullivan
Bloodline: Muggle-born
Hair Color: Dark brown
Eye Color: Blue
General Build: Average
Height: Short
Birthplace: Cambridge, England
Brief Childhood History: Although Marina wouldn’t call herself mad, her parents have always encouraged her to ‘never lose her spark of madness’. They were both social activists when they met. They didn’t plan on having a baby, but it happened, and there she was. Marina was raised by two of the most caring parents in an environment that had love oozing from its pores, if environments had pores.
Recently, her parents haven’t been as active as they used to be, sort of stopping when they were raising her. Her mother now works as a nurse in a care home. Her father has had more difficulties landing a stable job, but he makes due by giving music lessons from their house. They encourage her to listen to her heart and to take a stand if something feels or seems wrong. She always has, but then again ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ has so far been easy for her to distinguish.
She’s still naïve in the sense that she believes she can get any outcome she wants in a situation simply by believing being right is enough—she’s not used to being confronted or presented with different opinions. That was until she started school. ‘Standing up for what you think is right’ often rubs people, especially kids, the wrong way. She wasn’t the most popular girl in school, and with early signs of magic, most weird occurrences were associated with her, but she got by okay (and with semi-interest in subjects that didn’t require being outside or doing fun, usually physical, activities), especially with her friends from outside of school.
Her parents had formed a tight-knight group of friends during their years as activists and she grew up with their friends’ children as her friends. They were three girls, and they were the siblings she never had. With them Marina thought she was the best person she could be: funny, witty, and sharp. With strangers she just came off as opinionated, annoying, and persistent.
Summer before her first year at Hogwarts, or ‘super exclusive boarding school somewhere far away and cut off’ to her friends, amidst all the football, swimming, and biking, she cried like never before at the thought of not seeing them until Christmas, and then only for a bit until Summer. In fervent defiance against the real and imaginary threats of separation, she made them make a pact that promised all the promises an 11-year-old not worrying about the future promises, like never changing, telling each other everything, and never forgetting one another.
Strengths (Including Personality and Academic): She’s honest, which can bring about unpleasantness, but the pleasant things far outweigh it. Marina’s inherited her parents’ sense of justice and as such she can make for a very fierce ally. As an athletic kid, she’s not afraid to get her hands dirty or roll around in the mud and in fact enjoys it. She’s not very self-conscious—mistakes don’t deter her. She’s friendly, enjoying making people fit in and feel welcome when she’s in the position to do so. Marina would do well in and enjoy classes that both take place on the grounds and are more practical, such as Flying and Care of Magical Creatures. And although she’d probably still need to practice a lot, she’d also find Charms practical and fascinating enough to keep her motivated to do well.
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic): She’s very honest, which can often lead to misconceptions (funnily enough) and assumptions about her, icky tension, and minor altercations. She believes in fairness, but can be stubborn about it—realizing she’s wrong is easy enough, but admitting it is no walk in the park and she can be very hardheaded about it. She’s often seen as loud-mouthed, pushy, and abrasive when provoked. As for academics, forget Potions and History of Magic—and pretty much any theoretical part of any class. If it’s too much to read and/or memorize, Marina is simply helpless and she’ll try, but she won’t make much of an effort. Merlin help her in her academic life.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Hufflepuff. She may not be super hardworking, but Marina’s nothing if not fair. She’s also one of the nicest kids around—sure she can be mean, but most of the time she’s only mean to those who aren’t being very nice, and being nice doesn’t mean she’s a pushover. She will stand up to people and stand up for people with almost Gryffindor-like courage, but Marina would most belong to and be an asset to the Hufflepuff House. (and I’m most willing to wait until there’s a spot available!)
