Brief Family History: Growing up in a dingy house with seven brothers and sisters prepared Nyx Stevens for a lot of things. Perpetual chaos was one of them; lack of attention was another. Her parents, Mark and Ellie Stevens, barely remembered to pay the bills, let alone give individual attention to any of the children. Instead of fading into the backdrop, however, Nyx was determined to stand out. Gifted with leadership skills from the start and mature beyond her years, she became very good at controlling her rowdy siblings -- so good, in fact, that she was more responsible for her five younger siblings than either of her two older sisters by the time she turned eight. By then, their familial situation had drastically deteriorated. Nyx's parents had become entrenched in their own illusions for so long that they could not cope with reality once it really hit. Huge chunks had to come out of the family budget to pay for Hogwarts tuition, and before long, the family was spiraling into debt. Tremendous marriage problems ensued, and Ellie stopped coming home altogether by the time Nyx had turned nine. The burden fell on Mark to earn enough from his low paying job as a specialist in Greek mythology (which explained why all the children were named after Greek deities) to be able to feed, clothe, and shelter eight children -- and on top of that, to eventually put all of them through school. As a result, Nyx was expected to help in any way she could, and has practically mothered the her three youngest siblings in her own lackluster way.
Now eleven years of age, Nyx is entering her first year at Hogwarts. She does resent her parents a little for the state of her clothes and school equipment (all secondhand and of shoddy quality), but refuses to judge herself as inferior to her wealthier peers. In fact, she doesn't feel like her family's financial situation should affect her at all -- she's still brimming with confidence, and will gladly slap or hex anyone who dares to insult her family.
Strengths (Including Personality and Academic): With her confidence, dominant personality, and natural charisma, Nyx is good at grabbing the spotlight and keeping it. She practically redefines the word carefree; nothing seems to rattle or affect her, and she's seems to be as cool-tempered as can be. She will not, however, let anyone push her around -- she's sharp-witted and incisive, and can and will use words to hurt others. Her straightforwardness and honesty can frighten and offend some, but Nyx isn't afraid to speak her mind. She's almost frighteningly independent; she can function well with or without friends and doesn't care if anyone likes her at all ("I am the way I am, take me or leave me"). In fact, Nyx will do or say just about anything -- she fears very little, and craves danger in a way that is hardly healthy. Consequently, she does have a tendency to get in trouble, and knows how to worm her way out of sticky situations from experience.
Her academic strengths lie in the classes that involve more practical work, namely Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms. She's quite intelligent, but doesn't try particularly hard in her other classes. Learning bores her.
Weaknesses (Including Personality and Academic): Blunt, loud, and occasionally crass, Nyx is not one to consider her actions before carrying them out. She has no filter between her brain and her mouth, and as a consequence, tends to offend and alienate very sensitive individuals. Her overwhelming self-esteem can be interpreted as arrogance; she is, in truth, very prideful, and will oftentimes let her competitiveness get the best of her. She is not afraid to butt heads openly with others or cause chaos -- tumult has been a constant in her life, so additional conflict doesn't affect her anymore. Though brimming with confidence, her one insecurity is her familial situation, and any insults that target her family will without a doubt provoke her ire.
Nyx's academic weaknesses are many. Though intelligent, she is bored very easily, and any classes that require a lot of studying will receive very little effort from her. These include History of Magic and Astronomy. She's curiously weak at Herbology as well; she's so negligent that any plants under her care will surely die.
What House You Feel Your Character Belongs In and Why: Without a doubt, Gryffindor. Her bravery is one of her most outstanding traits, and I really can't see her fitting as well anywhere else. Though she does have the wit necessary to be a Ravenclaw, her attitude does not match with that of the majority of the house. She's neither incredibly loyal nor trusting, so she wouldn't be a Hufflepuff, and she's not calculating enough to be a Slytherin.
