Guidelines for Good Role-play
- DO have fun! That is what this is all about, after all!
- DO interact with as many characters as you can during your stay at Hogwarts.
- DO think of fun/exciting/intrigueing storylines and invite others to join them or create them with you. Make sure to run your storyline by an admin once you have it figured out!
- DO make detailed posts in the RP areas. Try to include not only what your character says or does, but how they do it and what other things might be going on around them!
- DO jump in and get involved! Role play as though you have been at Hogwarts, not as though you are just arriving. We are always "mid-term" here, so it is best to just jump in and start playing!
- DO create an interesting and dynamic character that gets along well with at least some other characters. Having a character that is really good and perfect, or really evil and nasty is very flat and boring! Make sure your character falls somewhere in the middle and has the ability to change and be effected by what is going on around them.
- DO read posts that you aren't involved in! It is always very interesting to see what others are doing and it can give you an idea of who you might want to start a storyline with next!
- DON'T roleplay your character as always late for class simply because you come in to a classroom post late. Just jump in! Unless your character enjoys being punished, it is better to pretend as though you've been there the entire time rather than coming in late.
- DON'T try to role play a fan fiction you wrote or are trying to write. This is about playing with others, not just with yourself and your story. It is better to not base your character on any story you have previously written, especially if you are attached to that character.
- DON'T expect to change any of the canon characters. This role play attempts to portray the canon characters as accurately as we are able to do. Do not attempt to be the first student to stand up to Snape and win. It just isn't going to happen!
- DO remember the difference between life and art. Just because a character is mad at yours doesn't mean you have to start PMing them to find out what you did wrong in real life.
- DON'T change your character completely. Sure, a change is good once in a while, but how much fun is someone who could be completely different the next time you RP with them? (this includes everything from hair, to speech pattern to friendships)
- DON'T let your character know everything. Give them some room to be uncertain about what other characters are thinking, and don't let them know too much in class. Remember everything that you know is not what they know!
- DON'T try to write your character's speech in a British accent... it doesn't work and it's hard to read.
- DON'T control the actions of other characters. You may say what you are doing, but without permission from another character, you may not do anything to them.
